Disabled Toilet Alarm (DTA) System
All new disabled toilet facilities should be fitted with a fixed method of communication (as recommended in BS8300:2001). Baldwin Boxall’s Disabled Toilet Alarm kit provides a fully compliant and cost-effective solution. Easy to install and use, the kit contains all the components necessary for an alarm system for one disabled toilet. An added benefit is that multiple toilet alarms can be incorporated as part of a VIGIL OmniCare system, creating a complete Emergency Communication package (please refer to the OmniCare brochure). Each standard kit (pictured) includes the following components:
Controller: Combined power supply and controller with reset button, audible alarm and
high visibility LED.
Pull switch: Ceiling mounted pull cord (with two fully compliant ‘G’ pulls) with LED.
Reset point: Reset button and LED to reset calls locally.
Light/Sounder: Overdoor triangular lens with integral sounder to attract attention.

Alarm Controller
The alarm controller forms the heart of the disabled toilet alarm system and should be located where it will attract staff attention. When a call is generated, the high visibility LED and integral sounder operate to alert staff. The unit also features a reset button to cancel the call; this feature can be disabled when the unit is not adjacent to the toilet. The integral backup battery provides continued operation in the event of a mains supply failure. Battery condition is monitored and will alert staff when a replacement is required. Requires a 35mm deep double gang flush back box or ‘round cornered’ plastic surface box.
Ceiling Pull Switch
The ceiling pull switch must be fitted within the toilet area in a position accessible to the user. The unit comprises a three metre cord (this may be adjusted to suit ceiling height) and provides two easy to operate ‘G’ pulls. The 50mm diameter G pulls have been designed to fully comply to BS8300:2001 requirements. The unit features an integral reassurance LED to confirm a call has been generated and that help is on the way. The pull switch is supplied as a self-contained surface-mount unit. Additional ceiling pull switches can be fitted within the same location, maybe above a bath/shower, to provide complete cover in one area. Up to three ceiling pull switches can be connected to one controller. Please refer to the BS8300:2001 summary on the reverse of this leaflet for positioning.
Overdoor Light/Sounder
The overdoor light/sounder unit provides a visual and audible indication local to the toilet. Typically fitted above the door (should be outside the room containing the alarm) the unit features an ultra bright triangular light and high output sounder. Requires a 25mm deep single gang flush back box or ‘round cornered’ plastic surface box.
Reset Point
The reset point is fitted to the wall inside the toilet area, enabling the system to be reset at the point of call. The unit should be placed within reach of the toilet/wheelchair and is fitted with an integral reassurance LED. Requires a 25mm deep single gang flush box or ‘round cornered’ plastic surface box.
BS8300: 2001 Alarm Systems ~ Summary
A Disabled Toilet Alarm must not be confused, visually or audibly, with a fire alarm.
The alarm pull cord should be sited so that it can be operated from the toilet and adjacent floor
area.
The pull cord, coloured red, should provide two red bangles of 50mm in diameter ~ one set at 800-1000 mm and the other set at 100 mm above floor level.
Visual and audible feedback should be provided to indicate the alarm has been triggered.
The alarm indicator located outside the toilet area should be located where it will be seen and heard by people able to provide assistance and
indicate where help is required.
An additional alarm indicator may be fitted remotely.
The reset control must be clearly marked as such and sited so that it is within reach from a wheelchair and the toilet.
